My hope is when people hear celebrities speak about their opinions on medical conditions; they take what is said with a grain of salt. Case and point--Tom Cruise and Post-Partum Depression and now Michael Savage and Autism.
Problem is, so many base their health and wellness on what some famous person said, but the celeb has no accountability.
Keep in mind, these celebs are repeating what someone has scripted for them or they are spouting off their own ignorant opinion.
Michael Savage is a classic case. Earlier this week, Savage spouted off that “99% percent of the cases (of autism), (is) a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”
Attributing this well established medical condition as nothing more than bad parenting, Savage has degraded the millions of parents who deal with autism on a daily basis. This ignorant (or stupid) comment will encourage someone out there to base their opinion of autism.
Keep in mind, the celebrities who stand on soapboxes to rock the boat are usually people who are far from medical experts. These are usually those who've most likely not read (or understand) the numerous studies to disprove what they are saying.
His statements are far different from Cynthia Nixon promoting breast cancer awareness or Katie Couric encouraging people to get their colon checked. Savage's statements are biased, verbal venom that will only end up boosting his numbers and giving someone the idea that autism isn't a real medical condition that needs to be treated. A simple time out or a swat on the butt should do the trick approach could be damaging.
Parents of autistic kids can be some of the most attentive parents I’ve ever seen, so to say this is simply a bad parents and a kid who needs to Yes, there is an increase in autism and many kids can be "dumped" into this category, but because the spectrum (signs and symptoms) of autism were expanded to include a broad ranges of symptoms, the numbers have continued to rise. Parenting can play a part in how an autistic child acts and reacts to his/her environment, but bad parenting does not cause autism.
Keep in mind when a celeb makes derogatory comments about people's medical conditions they only do two things: hurt and help
They usually end up hurting those with the condition and help his numbers, even when they ban him off the air.
